A Hole In The Hedge

She plunges to the ground
Her final showdown with the wind
Surrendering to the ravages of the wild
That have beaten her smooth greyed branches
And clashed arms with her mighty boughs
Yielding to Nature’s force
The untamed invincible beast

She concedes defeat
Unable to sustain her fortitude
Nor retain the will any longer to stand guard on the wayside
As the eye of the storm becomes her Waterloo
And she falls;
Ash lost to ashes
Now a hole in the hedge
