What If We’ve Got It All Wrong

Do you ever stop and wonder
If those things you think you know
Are predisposed to assumption
Conditioned thoughts that flow
Out of a line of processes
That construct along the way
Foundations that may turn out to be
So incorrect one day

For if that was the case then
All that we had leant would
Not be the way we thought it was
Nor stand the way it stood
And suddenly our world would be
Turned Inside out for sure
And upside down; somewhat confused
As facts became so flawed

For the base of all the theories
Our hypotheses and such
Would end up being nonsense
And not add up to much
And postulation, conjecture
Would’ve been false all along
But if that was the case would we
Admit that we were wrong?

Would we have an open mind set?
Would we let creative thought
Be flexible to turn things round
And make them as they ought
To have been in the first place
Correct those failed ideas
Or would we continue the pretence
Let it run for year on year

For insights come but once a while
And often are rebuffed
By those who think that they know best
Say “Now that is quite enough!”
“Don’t question what we know for sure
Don’t disrespect those who
Know all there is to know for they
Know so much more than you”

And with these grand dismissals
The font of knowledge grows
From what has gone before based on
What everyone else knows
Lest daring to audaciously
Question the rank and file
With queries that may then reveal
They were wrong all the while

So ….

Do you ever stop and wonder
If those things you think you know
Are predisposed to assumption
Conditioned thoughts that flow
Out of a line of processes
That construct along the way
Foundations that may turn out to be
So incorrect one day

Contemplation

Taking the space to contemplate
A brief moment in time
To stop!
Not in purposeful meditation
But to pause;
To consider;
To think
Amidst the busyness of the day
Ahead the pile of ironing
The burgeoning debate
The critical evaluation of an overdue essay
And mass of backdated reading
Pressing marketing deadlines;
School letters;
Children’s demands
Appointments;
Administration;
The mundane
To stop!
And to ponder
To imagine that if the world stopped
If the last breath left my soul and the final beat pulsed through my heart
So that life itself vanished in this moment
What would my legacy be?
What footprint would I have left in the sand?
What difference would I have made?
And with that thought;
That contemplation;
Momentum returns
With a new urgency

The Best Things Are Worth Waiting For

Dreams

Dreams past reality
Yonder the given
Deeper than slumber
Outside yet within
Further; farther; untouchable
And yet almost tangible in their existence

Dreams past reality
Unconsious existence
Being unfathomable
Surreal and bizarre
Images, emotions, sensations
And yet accommodating desire’s ether

Dreams past reality
Beyond consciousness
Intrinsic phenomena
Conscious insights
Manifesting parallel illusions
And yet expressing a heart’s core content

Nice

Why is it when we’re younger we
Have certain words drilled out?
Out of our minds, our lexicon
To never hear them shout

Some words that from our brain are banned
Or else they’ll be our vice
Such words that have done nothing wrong
Like, for example, nice!

I mean, whatever did that word
Just do to gravitate
All teachers on the planet to
Say “No!  The word I hate!”

This word that sums up perfectly
When something is just fine!
Despite the fact that there might be
More synonyms refined

For simple “nice” has been bullied
Rejected some might say
But how else can we then just wish
Each one a real ‘nice’ day!

Dawn Breaks

They say if it’s not broken then
Don’t meddle and fix it
Or tamper with what is working
Or try to change the fit

And yet each day the dawn breaks
And birds all congregate
To natter and cheep ‘tween themselves
What could be the day’s fate

They gossip in the branches and
They shout from tree to tree
So are they fixing up the day
Or just waking up me!

And if dawn breaks is it broken?
Is it down and feeling blue
Is that why it’s a new day
To replace the old one too

Is it a good occasion to
Mend what went on before?
I think that it just might be that
A better day for sure!

Sonnet To Nostalgia

Oh feel the kiss of a seductive past
Nostalgic anchor of my very soul
The memories secure to always last
Emotive power that pulls and does console
The glue that binds the whole thing together
That gives and upholds life with true meaning
With endurance of the self forever
In nostalgia, sentiment convening
Yet still to sail the seas from here to there
The past; the pavement of a future way
The course to navigate with grace and care
Save maudlin heart and flowers across the bay
For still nostalgia beckons hearts of all
Like roots of oak tree that grows straight and tall

Weeds

Weeds can be rather pretty but
To gardeners they’re the pits
Depending on position and
If in their garden sits

For to see them in a meadow
Can be a glorious sight
But put them in your flower beds and
The picture’s not so bright

And so these weeds are rendered
Dichotomous at best
In nature, pretty native flowers
Yet in gardens, nature’s pest!

Messengers in Time

Bright morning sun, emitting rays of warmth
Warmth through space that has gone before
Luminous stars, radiating light
Light from years gone by in cosmic antiquity
Cumulous clouds, condensing droplets of vapour
Vapour from streams and rivers of yesterday
Crystal clear tides lapping in waves of water
Water from the ocean’s basin set before

Clear memories, calling to mind experiences
Experiences paving awareness from the past
Ancestral genes, expressing pathways of inheritance
Inheritance journeying from lives once lived
Eternal legacies, leaving their enduring imprint
Imprints to last from then until now and beyond
Messengers of time, from yesterday to today
Today and now and onwards towards tomorrow
