Arrhythmia

It beats but not in tempo
It pulses out of time
It taps all in a muddle
Less rhythm and less rhyme
Wiping the hours out daily
In a whirl of dizziness
Aware of butterflies in veins
Or struggling to catch breath
As heart beat and heart rhythm
Conducts all out of skew
For that’s the way arrhythmia
Can feel when it strikes you!

The Heart Rhythms Charity

If you’re feeling symptomatic
If you’re young or if you’re old
Or if you’re feeling fine
Just do as you are told
And get to know your pulse
To feel a constant beat
Lest if it’s bounding out of time
Don’t say it is the heat

But go and get it looked at
Check in with your GP
To see what is occurring
Let them be referee
To see which beats are dandy
Or which have gone astray
So take your pulse and make a note
For good heart health today!

And then we’ll all be happy
Celebrating more lives saved
Ensuring better care for those
Whose pulses don’t behave
Increasing improved access
For those arrhythmically
With help and with support from the
Heart Rhythms Charity

Know Your Pulse

The Heart-Beat Blues

Woke up this very morning and was feeling rather blue
Woke up this very morning and was feeling rather blue
Cos my pulse was out of sync
And there ain’t much I can do

And

I got those heart beat blues with its rhythm out of touch
I got those heart beat blues with its rhythm out of touch
Cos it beats arrhythmically
I don’t like it very much

It makes me feel all woozy, all faint and mighty odd
It makes me feel all woozy, all faint and mighty odd
And these blues are so tiring
Riding over me roughshod

So

I curl up in ma corner and think the day is done
I curl up in ma corner and think the day is done
But Lord, there’s more to livin’
And I wanna have some fun

For

These blues ain’t gonna beat me – not spoil my life today
For these blues ain’t gonna beat me – not spoil my life today
I’m gonna pick myself up
Get checked out; be on ma way

Giving

Now here’s a little idea
The world’s not about me
But about contribution
The way of liberty
The way to give to others
To uplift them so true
No the world’s not about me
But for me – it’s about you

It’s the giving not the getting
The sacrifice we make
For neighbours and our family
The time we give not take
The sharing and the caring
Fulfilment that then comes
From using our resourcefulness
To help another feel less glum

To make their life much better
To help them with their dream
To encourage them to focus
To nurture life supreme
But not just by resources
For none of these impart
The gift we give to others
For that gift comes from our heart

You’ve Got The Beat

There are hearts wherever you might look
Just see them all about
But only one sort needs your time
And care to sort right out

The one inside your body, see
The one that pumps to squirt
The blood into your arteries
That stays awake alert

For every day and every night
It beats a constant stroke
To keep your body stocked up with
Clean blood. For real – no joke!

It works so hard and cannot rest
But you can help it still
With healthy food and exercise
To make yourself feel brill

And every now and then maybe
Just count the beats from it
To know your pulse rate and rhythm
As part of keeping fit!

Pulse

They said “Go get the leccy man”
The one who checks the wires
The chap who tests the current and
Who sees what then transpires”

They said get him to look at it
But then the fuse just blew
The meter crashed and power all failed
And sparks spat out and flew

The lights switched off; the cooker stopped
The fridge got rather hot
And all because I didn’t call
Because I had forgot!

And it’s the same thing with your pulse
The beat within your heart
As leccy current fires this beat
Save needing a kick start!

So take a simple test to know
Your pulse beyond all doubt
For if it goes awry at all
You can get it checked out

“Leccy” is a colloquialism for Electric

Know Your Beat (Pulse)

Know your pulse and monitor
Note just how quick it beats
Ordinarily that is
When counting the repeats

Yes, know your pulse and keep a note
Observe the way it ticks
Understand and pinpoint any
Rhythms if slow or quick

Be alert to any changes
Events not right per se
And get it checked with your GP
To save a life today

The Beat

Hey! Get down to the beat
When walking down the street
The beat that strikes out rhythm blues
As heart beat that hits headline news
With constancy repeat

And rock a rate that’s true
But know right what suits you
The boom boom boom along your way
Through arteries and veins each day
That circulate O2

So know your pulse for sure
The knocking at heart’s door
The dub dub dub that you can hear
Or feel pulsating oh so clear
For heart health and much more

Sonnet To A Heart Beat (Know Your Pulse)

A heart beat pumping though life every day
A rhythm finely honed to tick on by
A pulse that taps and never goes away
A cadence of existence to imply
A measure that keeps tempo and keeps time
A timpani in life that we all know
A stroke that paces like a structured rhyme
An undulating meter fit to go
Yet palpitate or syncopate the beat
Or feel it quiver anachronically
When pulse jiggers and jumps out of repeat
Go get a check-up with your own GP
For know your pulse and maybe stave off strife
Rhythmically aware to save your life
