A Fable

A Fable
Four little starlings
Sat all in a row
Up high upon the aerial
Thinking where to go

Three tweeted all together
Hatching a plan of where to fly
Yet one would not play ball
And flew off alone into the sky

He flew towards the sun
Intent that he knew best
Proud that he was his own bird
Independent of the rest

He ignored the other three
Who tweeted ‘come back here’
But Derek (we’ll call him that)
Thought ‘I’ve got this, don’t you fear’

Soaring on the wind,
He puffed himself with glee
“I’m so much better than those others
So much greater than those three!”

His ego was astonishing
His arrogance complete
Yet sadly he would not listen
Why the other three did tweet

For the sun, as he perceived it
Was not the sun at all
But a ball of fluffy ginger cat
Who became Derek’s downfall!

And in an instant with a huge pounce
Up high into the blue
Poor Derek met his comeuppance
And became this cats new chew!

So the moral of this story
Is listen to the team
For their perspective maybe the ticket
That helps you reach your dream!

Human Values

St George

Today’s the day to be a knight
As in those days of old
To overcome the power of bad
With bravery so bold

For out there in the world about
A dragon lies in wait
Destroying all pure beauty bright
In flames of greed and hate

So step up like the saint, St George
And fight for truth and light
Imbuing strength from deep within
To conquer darkest night

And slay the beast that dares to mock
The good in life and grace
With sword that’s poised to destroy ill
Bring peace unto this place

Dressgate

White dress, gold dress, black dress, blue
Just goes to show so many views
Yet none are wrong and none are right
Cos with a little inner sight
The fact apparent seems to be
That each has subjectivity
That’s biologically hard wired
Where rods and cones get simply fired
Up in so many different ways
That all opinions have their day
And therefore it may be correct
To understand and not forget
That we are all a collective
With many varied perspectives

Perspective

The world is but a body of fluid perspective
Covered in a skin of beliefs
Yet pierce that skin and she will bleed
Bleed wars, vengeance and bitterness
Until veins coagulate into curdled rivers of hatred
And scars pit her being forever

Never Give Up!

See the watery sun
Weak on the horizon
Struggling to awake
Battered by the storms
Diluted by the rains
Assaulted in her plight
To rise up against the night
And break through dawn’s fog

And yet always, without fail
Claiming victory each morning
As she climbs into the sky
Dismissing the darkness
To bring light on each new day
An example for us all
To never concede
To never give up

Ophthalmic Twist

When I was young I marvelled with my eyes
To navigate the world and all I saw
I loved and laughed and, yes, I sometimes cried
And sought to see as much for certain sure

When I was older by the use of sight
I read and learnt absorbing words in text
And saw so many things past rainbows bright
Exploring life to see what happened next

But now I’m old and vision escapes me
The light grows dim and sights blurs to a mist
My heart is now my compass and my lens
Accommodating in ophthalmic twist

rEvolving Communication

Once upon a time ago
Before the use of words
Man would gesticulate and grunt
Poke with finger to be heard

The next came verbal offerings
With speech to make things clear
As soon enough talk then evolved
Over the course of years

Whilst etching out and marking
Was still quite fashionable
With stick or other object
Later pen used to scribble

But in the twentieth century
The computer did arrive
With use of mouse to click click click
The new way to survive

But then in ‘rEvolving’ fashion
As though fingers were all new
Man started once again to poke
To get the message through!

Knowledge

He knows it all; knows everything
Thinks there’s nothing left to learn
So arrogant in the extreme
And yet in time; in turn
The opposite will be revealed
As gaps begin to show
How little he now understands
For knowledge really knows
That knowing is more so searching
The quest to find out more
The choice to leave no stone unturned
Nor slam shut any door

The truth that in our daily lives
There’s always more to find
More to illuminate those banks
Of knowledge in our mind
And that the task is endless; that
The job will never cease
And all bar all opinion, thought
And questions won’t release
Us from wisdom’s apprentice role
Into eternity
For there’s no cap and gown to wear
No ‘Knowledge’ BSc!

Away In A Manger

Possibly a modern day take on what would happen if the nativity was today

Away in a manger
No crib for a bed
Summon the social workers
And flag up Ofsted
For it’s told that this baby
Might be slightly odd
For his mother is saying
That his Dad is called God

But God doesn’t exist
Says HM Revenue
For without national insurance
There’s not much they can do
Like collect any maintenance
Vaccinate him and check
That he goes into school
Not be a pain in the neck

Less the problems apparent
Of delusions and more
As a rumour on the street says
He’s gonna save all the poor
And rise to be king
Though as an outcast as such
So haul in a caseworker
Bring him back into touch

And ensure he develops
As a conventional boy
That doesn’t play with the Angels
But fisher price toys
Ensuring conformity
In the true light of day
So that this little baby
Lies sweet on the hay
