Guilty Deflection (A Haiku)

Constant deflection
The single device that hoists
With one’s own petard

Inner Qualities

If you want to impress me
Reveal the unseen
A heart of compassion
A mind that is keen
A will to do better
A focus on care
With hard work; integrity
All thrown right in there

And be kind and be graceful
Be accountable too
In all that you say
And in all that you do
And over all else
Past the big house and fast car
Know that it’s what is within
That shows me just who you are

On The AF Highway

On the AF Highway
It’s a battle; it’s a pain
For though this vehicle’s moving quickly
It’s inconsistent all the same
For one minute it is speeding
Then the ABS kicks in
Before cruise control takes over
And another bout begins

And as such the fuel is guzzled
Using up all energy
Going up and down the gears
With lights flashing constantly
As the electrics get all fizzy
And the highway seems to spin
Hitting traffic jams and road blocks
In race you’ll never win

Wonder

I wonder as I wander
What wonders I will see
A wandering in wonderment
Midst wonderful country
A wonderwork to wonder on
Whilst wandering about
For a wonder, it’s a wonderland
Without a shade of doubt!

Sorry – The Hardest Thing

It must be lovely to go through life
Without accepting blame
Taking no responsibility
Exhibiting no shame
For the mistakes and the mishaps
That happen to us all
But maybe that is what will be
Your own biggest downfall

For the reality is as humans
We slip up and are flawed
For built into our psyche
Is an ‘oopsie button’ clause
That’s supposed to see the blunders
That are part of human life
And then press the reset button
To save us further strife

And thus by such acknowledgement
We learn when we go wrong
Take heed of our mistakes and then
Before too very long
We stretch the ‘sorry’ muscle
And grow in character
To learn life’s harder lessons
And improve on who we are

Where Were You?

When I needed you, where were you?
Where were you at that time
When the world seemed big and scary
And nothing seemed sublime
And where were you in the moment
When I reached out for a hand
When my heart was sad and lonely
Depressed; in sinking sand

Where were you for those seconds
When your brightness would have brought
The sun back; warm and shiny
When I felt so damned; distraught
And where were you when I called out
So desperate for a word
For a hug or reassurance
For a chance just to be heard

For now as I lay dying
As I loose the will to live
I wonder if you even cared at all
That you failed to stop and give
A minute of your precious time
A second of your day
When desperation came a calling
Yet you chose to turn away

If you are ever in this position and need someone to talk to, the Samaritans are an organisation that will listen in your moment of need.  They say “We offer a safe place for you to talk any time you like, in your own way – about whatever’s getting to you. You don’t have to be suicidal.”   FMI go to https://www.samaritans.org

Contentment

Should life be all about happiness
Achieving that bubble of emotion
That rides the high waves of excitement
Or more so about countered contentment
Bobbing about on the ripples
Negotiating the ups and downs
With calm and measured serenity
You tell me?

Metaphors for Choice

If you can’t see the path of freedom
If you can’t view autonomy
If you look for the bad and hope for worse
You impinge your liberty

If you fail to see behind the veil
Don’t turn the stone to view
What’s hidden underneath you won’t
Ever see what is true

And if you don’t listen, only shout aloud
Your thoughts will fall unheard
For freedom’s path reveals all this
Away from wars with words

It wends along the open road
Isn’t constricted or constrained
By dichotomies or biased thought
More so along a spectrum lane

A spectrum lane of diversity
Where all shall have a voice
Where freedom and autonomy
Are the metaphors for choice.

Aging

So I appear to be getting older
With more greys than blond for sure
With creaky joints and eyes that aren’t
So focussed anymore

And I see my midline growing
That – I don’t like, I confess
Whilst my heart’s a flipping nuisance
With AWOL beats from stress!

It also takes a little longer
To get from a to b
To mow the lawn or walk the dog
Or even make the tea!

Yet the culprit for these issues
Appears not to care a jot
Just sits there by his armchair
Almost rooted to the spot!

He never lifts a finger
Nor offers to assist
Moreso waves his arms in circles
To ensure no second’s missed

And to drive the point home further
He calls out to ensure
That hourly I’m reminded of
Time knocking on my door!

For whilst I am but human
And aging is my destiny
His face simply never changes
And he stays all wrinkle free!

His frame remains in-tact
Age makes no odds to him
He never gains an ounce of fat
And really stays quite slim

And so long as he’s wound daily
His ticker tick tick tocks
For you see the bane of all my aging woes
I blame on Grandfather Clock!
