Lego Memory

Like lego pieces scattered
That come to form a whole
Your memory is similarly
A process that enrols
So many different areas
Of a brain it isn’t true
But memories are what make up
Yourself. Agreed?  It’s true!

From what you had for breakfast
To what you did last week
The colour of those socks you wore
The way Aunt Ethel speaks
Your spellings and times tables
The way you get to school
The names of friends and family
Not to forget the rules

And so just to remember
Your brain has much to do
To code and store and then retrieve
What a hullabaloo!
So get to work and focus
Get busy one, two, three
And let’s get all braintastic
To improve your memory!

That Thing

That thing
That thing that I can no longer access
That precious thing that defines me
Yet no longer I know
That no longer resonates
No longer lingers in the corridors of mind
Harbingers no more in neural mazes
And yet as in a maze wonders lost

So lost
Lost to yesterday and maybe lost now
For who maybe knows anymore?
Do I know? Do you know?
What is there but this
Cognition impaired; memories gone
Confusion; chaotic thoughts
Nothing; absent threads of cognizance

Cognizance stripped
Stripped like the bark of an old tree
But no-one sees.  Not even I see
The sagacity trapped deep in the folds
For degeneration of matter
Is the mask that now seems only to matter
And yet – you see – I am still me
Yes! Deep inside I am still that thing

Positive Reinforcement

Let me tell you how it is
The game of true rewards
Responding to a stimulus
To gain like and applaud

It stimulates the synapses
And animates them so
The neural kick deep in the brain
Excited in the flow

The flow of prizes and pure praise
A hearty pack on back
That says to mind, “Go do again!”
Addicted right on track

To want more of this good thing
The smiling, happy way
That motivates us to go on
In dopamine display

And so in cyclic pleasure
The pattern does repeat
With pleasure sensors all alert
To raise the old heart beat!

And lest our conscious knowledge
We’re putty in the hand
Of positive reinforcement
Moulded like grains of sand

Neural Blooms

There is a place deep in ourselves
Where free will operates
A place where liberty exists
Where right and wrong relate
Where tides of anger lay controlled
By stronger stimuli
Where good emerges, bad deeds fade
A place where conscience lies

Though sadly in the twilight hours
That seat of consciousness
Can lapse into the evening air
Diminish and regress
As cells degenerate and die
And systems fail to fire
With palsy’s grip that suffocates
The will and hope’s desire

A wash that drowns the mind of man
The sea of discontent
The fate of free will held hostage
In airs of malcontent
Where cruelly all those better times
Are stripped down horribly
With no concession towards night
And darkness neurally

There is a place deep in ourselves
Where free will operates
A place to treasure and hold dear
Lest it becomes too late
So go forth into life enjoy
The seeds turned fragrant flowers
But care for those whose blooms are gone
In their retiring hours

Mind Blowing

My mind is blown with science;
It’s so big and it’s so huge
It’s so tiny and so minuscule
A force – a centrifuge
That spins my brain; accelerates
The dendrons from the start
But overall however great
I’ll always trust my heart!

Mind Blowing

Take A Break

Just stop and for a minute
Imagine in some way
The stuff that’s going round our brain
Is like a clogged highway
Full of traffic at a standstill
That can’t move from a to b
Mind congestion in the making
That’s so frustratingly
A mental defunct process
Where time is all too short
Too much to fit in too few hours
That leaves us over wrought

Or maybe it’s the hard drive
For instance call it RAM
Crashing from system overload
Or flood of too much spam
That clogs up the working software
And slows it down a pace
To stop our peak performance
And halt us in the race
The race that we now call life
That wears us all right down
For headaches and brain fog chapters
To inundate and drown

But there’s an epiphany
A way to pass the test
A simple and effective thing
That gives our brain a rest
To sojourn for a few moments
And maybe take a nap
To reboot – clear out the hard-drive
And traffic somehow zap
To renew, enthuse and prompt
For light bulb moments bright
Advocating mental downtime
To turn all things out right!

For downtime is a pre-set
And neurally hardwired
A need for functionality
For all to be inspired
A way to empty out our minds
When cluttered they’ve become
And open up a higher plane
That lets us then succumb
To ways most ingenious
To means of mindfulness
That whets the mind to come alive
And leave us all less stressed

If you’d like to know more about this you like to check out this article http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=mental-downtime which was signposted to me by Brendan Dobrowolny.  And of course, if you suffer from PoTS or Syncope that can deliver a payload of brain fog as part and parcel of those conditions why not visit stars.org.uk for more support.
