There’s Never Any Reason

There’s never any reason
To beat a little child
To smack them, whip them, hurt them
To leave them so defiled
By physical aggression
Or psychologically
To steal away their human right
To live a life that’s free
Of harm and exploitation
For each child has great worth
And each adult should protect them
Enhance their walk on earth
And pave a pathway forward
That’s full of love; that’s fair
That helps them prosper and grow up
To know somebody cares

Santa’s Wish List

Have you ever stopped and wondered
That Santa might get bored
Of mince pies, port, brandy and wine
When he is all aboard
His laden frosty sleigh
Out there on Christmas Eve
Away from elves and family
That he might make believe
Of lists of gifts he’d really love
The things he’d like the best
If Father Christmas came to him
And gave him a days rest?

Have you ever thought what he’d ask for
Things that would bring a smile
To Santa’s face if he was graced
With time off once a while
For perhaps he’d ask for vodka
Or even Christmas cake
Maybe a festive sweater
Scarf, socks or garden rake
Or maybe a new reindeer
A friend to help Rudolf
Or possibly clubs and new balls
For North Polonian Golf

But in truth I think he’d ask for
More peace and harmony
A planet that knew only love
And true equality
A place where guns lay silent
Where all would be as one
With lighter hearts and wonder bright
Where each would get along
Where poverty was ended
Where all water was clean
Where jealousy diminished
Leaving grass so very green

And so on Christmas Eve
When children go to bed
Perhaps it’s time to think again
When man all dressed in red
Pops down your chimney quickly
To fill stockings by tree
For he who makes a difference
Will inspire each to surely
Help Santa have his wish list
Past mince pies on his way
To give the gifts he craves the most
Kindness this Christmas Day

Away In A Manger

Possibly a modern day take on what would happen if the nativity was today

Away in a manger
No crib for a bed
Summon the social workers
And flag up Ofsted
For it’s told that this baby
Might be slightly odd
For his mother is saying
That his Dad is called God

But God doesn’t exist
Says HM Revenue
For without national insurance
There’s not much they can do
Like collect any maintenance
Vaccinate him and check
That he goes into school
Not be a pain in the neck

Less the problems apparent
Of delusions and more
As a rumour on the street says
He’s gonna save all the poor
And rise to be king
Though as an outcast as such
So haul in a caseworker
Bring him back into touch

And ensure he develops
As a conventional boy
That doesn’t play with the Angels
But fisher price toys
Ensuring conformity
In the true light of day
So that this little baby
Lies sweet on the hay

The Love Of Family

You’ll never earn a child’s respect
Through blackmailed bribery
You’ll never buy their devotion
Demanding that they see
You or indeed spend their time
In worshipping the ground
On which you walk; They can’t be bought
Nor will they e’er be found
Until you start to step up to
The mark; be honest too
And stop dangling a carrot for
Them to then follow you
Nor give them gifts or scare them from
Those whom you maybe hate
For children have autonomy
Their own pathways create
And only by your selfless heart
Will they then turn to you
And see your unconditional love
Be inspired by what you do
For they did not chose to be yours
They don’t elect to be
Tied up in your emotions nor
Your deep set jealousy
But they will love you to the end
They’ll love you; ask for nil
And you – well honour them for who
They are; Be constant still
And be the best that you can be
Embrace the truth and see
That you can’t buy and cannot sell
The love of family!

There are those in society nowadays that believe that children can be bought with rewards, bribes, demands – call it what you will.  There are those who subscribe to the doctrine of blame and blackmail to get their children to do their will.  There are those who coerce and believe that they can use all this to control children even starving them and taking away their basic provisions in order to stamp their authority like a brand on their own children.  The truth is children are their own person and have the right to autonomy and as they grow older they learn that others too have similar rights.  If we as adults don’t allow them to develop this and have their own voice, and respect them, then how are we ever to expect them to do likewise.  This isn’t about pampering to a child’s will but stepping up to the mark with responsibility and love.  This poem is dedicated to all those children who are forced to live the life of another and not their own, and our prayer goes out to them.  It is written from my heart to theirs.

Give Your Children Just Enough

Give your children just enough
To go and make some good
But not enough that then they fail
Nor see the tree or wood
Give them a start and help them to
Appreciate this Earth
To own their own pathways ahead
Not just by right of birth

And let them harness steadfastness
Inspired to do much more
To take the little that they have
And rise on footholds sure
With knowledge that they can succeed
Be who they want to be
And open up the way ahead;
Take opportunity

To know that by their own attempts
Their focus and their might
They’ll take the little that you give
And with hard work in sight
They’ll master their autonomy
Be true to who they are
And journey whilst holding on fast
So that they will go far

What Is A Child?

What is a child? It’s hard to say
For concepts and beliefs
Vary so much from here to there
In time span and relief

A “social actor” some may say
With ideas of their own
Or maybe childhood simply is
A construct all alone

A definition of the young
That’s made to represent
The way non-adults operate
And their development

Development that wax and wanes
With patterns that reveal
A change towards more organised
Not just the way they feel

Debated through biology
And the environment
Traced back to the great minds of old
Philosophy’s intent

And so what is a child you ask?
A question that implores
The quest to look at social traits
Genes, culture and much more

Keeping The Peace

Peel in bells of sleepiness
The bobby who is beat
As cop arresting drowsy eyes
Patrols the dreamy streets
Policing far flung galaxies
To plod on milky way
With helmet on and truncheon tight
Keeping the peace til day

The Fab4

There are four special people
Who grace my life each day
With joy and love and harmony
In all they do and say

From morning when sun rises
To night when moon’s about
They bless my life and bring a smile
Even when lights go out

And for their contribution to
The world I know for sure
They’ve earned the name that they’re known by
They are my fab fab4!

Empty Nest

As children start to leave the nest
There’s certain comfort sure
That we’ll still share the moon and stars
And sunshine evermore

For as the moon beams brightly and
Stars twinkle way up high
Or sunlight shines each waking day
We’re linked by constant sky

Reminding that as family
We’ll always be combined
Despite the distance; miles between
Our hearts will stay entwined

Time to fly the nest
How fast the years have passed by
No longer a boy

Happy Birthday
