Metaphors for Choice

If you can’t see the path of freedom
If you can’t view autonomy
If you look for the bad and hope for worse
You impinge your liberty

If you fail to see behind the veil
Don’t turn the stone to view
What’s hidden underneath you won’t
Ever see what is true

And if you don’t listen, only shout aloud
Your thoughts will fall unheard
For freedom’s path reveals all this
Away from wars with words

It wends along the open road
Isn’t constricted or constrained
By dichotomies or biased thought
More so along a spectrum lane

A spectrum lane of diversity
Where all shall have a voice
Where freedom and autonomy
Are the metaphors for choice.

Why Me?

Dear Lord, Why me?
What reason? What excuse?
When you created me?
Why the abuse?
Why, Lord, just why?
So many things gone wrong
A heart that fails to work
So weak – not strong?
Why pick on me?
Why chose to so create
A being with these issues
More of late!
Why think? “I know!
This one will do to try
How this and that will test
What goes awry!”
What sort of God
Does all of that
To leave a person
In pain feeling flat?

But Lord, you know
I’ll tell you what I think!
When pushed too far right there
Just to the brink
I’ll sing out loud
And see the good not bad
I’ll walk a life of joy
Not stay so sad
I’ll see the vista
Feel the fresh new air
And face each day
Renewed without a care
I’ll not submit
I’ll not give in and cry
For Lord, I’ll make this life
My friend; ally
And I will bear it
Not just like a cross
But fly right through because
I am the boss

I am in charge
Of life; my liberty
I want to be the one
Who swims so free
I want to know
I lived my life so well
Despite the obstacles
Not live in hell
I know I have
The choice for that is true
For you at least gave me
Freewill; sinew
And so my song
Will be this very one
One that has fought so hard
And overcome
A life all lived
With purpose and intent
A life that sees the good
Without relent
And so when I
Have drawn my last dear breath
I’ll wear a smile that loved and
Goes past death

Liberty

Liberty – human privilege
Protection of all men
Of women, children; sacrosanct
Freedom to hold the reign
Of life, the way you chose to go
The path that you might tread
Without suppression in the way
Stopping oppression dead
To have and hold autonomy
With independence true
Not confined or restricted by
Red tape and others too
To stand for all equality
Discrimination fall
To advocate a fairer way
That safeguards one and all
To be self-regulating and
To honour human rights
For choice, justice and liberty
The heart of freedom fights

Options

The options that you make in life
Should always be your own
Not orchestrated by the crowd
But stand up strong alone

To be the choices you would make
Not those of other folk
Who might impart their own imprint
Your destiny then choke

For choices seem so rife these days
From what to do or wear
From where to go, and what to take
Just so many out there

So don’t pay homage to the mob
Or bow to their demands
Nor to their expectations cede
Nor despotic commands

But shout out your aspirations
Alight your focus fire
For options that you make will then
Bring joy, enthuse, inspire

Words

A Haiku …..

Countless words to say

Our abundant lexicon

To choose from wisely

Conformity’s Mist

Oh the world so likes those who comply
Who say and do the right thing
Those who happily tow the party line
Or read from the same song sheet to sing

She promotes people who knuckle under
Or sit quietly in long listless rows
Cherishing those who happily sign on the line
Without threat to equilibrium pose

And those who accept red tape and bureaucracy
Are often exalted high over the rest
For the fact that they ask no questions
Gives them an A* in conforming at best

But the question that is mostly apparent
Is whether it’s really better this way?
Is it right that we’re encouraged to follow the crowd?
Institutionalised to stop us going astray?

Astray on a quest of pure knowledge
To a place where choices exit
Where we can think or debate or inquire once again
And live without conformity’s mist.
