Time

Time the fourth dimension
That gets us through each day
Ticking by second, minute, hour
To take us on our way

From past to present, future
It goes continually
From then, to now and onwards still
Into eternity

A measure of duration and
The gaps that fall between
Observed by calendar and clock
Yet never ever seen

And so by temporal measurement
Yet seldom just defined
Time walks its passage through our lives
And cannot be confined

Life’s Sleep Clock

When they are small there are no hours
Of sleep so guaranteed
As crying baby calls right out
To cater for their needs

Then later into childhood years
The patter of small feet
Beats the alarm in morning time
With smiles to each day greet

Next into adolescence and
Those teenage years they go
Where mornings just now don’t exist
Or not that they will know

Soon comes their college days and well
Bar lectures called at nine
The night-time oil burns ever bright
Where early hours seem fine

Succeeding this, the middle years
With hours that vary wide
From dawn time starts to get to jobs
With late nights to abide

Then old age hits and nights draw in
And sleep just has no rhyme
Arising hourly for relief
And dozing post lunchtime!

Time Flies!

What happened to this morning?
Where did it disappear?
Before you know the day will go?
And then the month – the year!
And after that the decade
As seasons drift on by
So watch out for the clock has wings
As time can really fly

Night-time Antics

Have you ever got clock muddled
And woken in the night
To think that it is morning and
Quite late at that – such fright!
To quickly jump up from your bed
And rush to start your day
Only then to take a breather
And find to your dismay
That in fact it’s really early
That morning hasn’t come
Oh dear you feel so silly and
So daft; a numpty chum!
But stop and think more rationally
As you return to bed
For all that rushed activity
Will mean that you instead
Can have a little lie in when
The cock finally crows
So that it’s swings and roundabouts
Now sleep – enjoy your doze!

Dedicated to my friend, NB, and my son after their separate night-time antics doing just this 🙂

Who said you’d never get it back
That minute that was gone
For last night you know the clocks fell back
So they were very wrong

And that just meant in time and space
We lived an hour again
Just shortly after midnight
As declared by old Big Ben

And so to all those cynics
Travelling back in time is neat
For in truth it happens every year
In our annual ‘Fall’ time treat!
