STE(A)M (Haiku)

Where STEM becomes STEAM
Pushing back the frontiers of
Science artfully

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) is a buzz word in education which sadly excludes the Arts and will no doubt go down as one of the biggest mistakes of our time as future generations are not afforded the opportunity at school to embrace their creativity with open mindedness, seeking out the answers to some of the biggest questions we face or develop the capacity to think outside the box. For Art is all this and more and should be on the same page as the STEM subjects to enable the driving force that is STEAM.  To this end, this little haiku is dedicated to this.

Give Your Children Just Enough

Give your children just enough
To go and make some good
But not enough that then they fail
Nor see the tree or wood
Give them a start and help them to
Appreciate this Earth
To own their own pathways ahead
Not just by right of birth

And let them harness steadfastness
Inspired to do much more
To take the little that they have
And rise on footholds sure
With knowledge that they can succeed
Be who they want to be
And open up the way ahead;
Take opportunity

To know that by their own attempts
Their focus and their might
They’ll take the little that you give
And with hard work in sight
They’ll master their autonomy
Be true to who they are
And journey whilst holding on fast
So that they will go far

The Human Quest

Exponential exploration
From ape to man in space
Yet still despite such gains it seems
There’s much to learn; embrace

Acknowledging that we don’t know
All that there is out there
Beyond the universal gate
Past planets and thin air

And so with open mind we must
Discover and explore
With yearning hearts to ascertain
More knowledge that’s for sure

And search til there’s no more to search
Ask til all answers cease
In quest to find all there’s to find
Our brain banks to increase

Then journey on with minded might
To realms so very far
Extending learning with intent
As man amongst the stars

Disappointed

Disappointed was the best word
Upset too strong
Let down too weak
Just plain disappointed
Trust betrayed
Hope severed
Promises broken
Saddened maybe
Frustrated definitely
Disillusioned almost certainly
But disappointed just seemed to sum it up
Disappointed!
That word hung heavy
They simply didn’t deserve him
He neatened his tie
Sighed
Picked up his books
And left
Never to look back

Results

Results don’t define you
They’re a snapshot in time
And you choose your fate
Your reason and rhyme

For whilst grades open doors
That’s all that they do
But that’s not to say
There aren’t other doors too

So results good or bad
Take a breath and just see
That today’s just the start
Past A B or C

And whatever the outcome
You are who you are
With bright future’s ahead
Past any A star!

For results don’t define you
They’re a snapshot in time
And you choose your fate
Your reason and rhyme

Exam Nerves

Sweaty paws!
Clenching jaws!
The testing season’s here
Heart beats race
Feet will pace
Pushed on by exam fears

Yet here’s the thing
O’er everything
Past sympathetic tone
Take a big breath
Lest scared to death
For you are not alone

And chill your beans
For by no means
Will too much stress help you
For certain sure
You do know more
Than you believe is true

So hold on to
And smile anew
For now the time is here
To demonstrate
Then celebrate
How much you’ve learnt this year!

Back to School!

Back to school! Oh great!  I think not!
To catch the bugs and nits
Side step the playground bullies midst
Those kids with pus filled zits
To duck the banter wagon
Avoiding drugs and drink
To hide away in lavatories
Whilst snatching forty winks
To tolerate the teachers
Save those who froth and foam
And watch the classroom wall clock til
It’s time to come back home!

Back to school! Oh great! I think not!
Homework issued every day
Arithmetic and reading books
A bore!  I want to play
With bans on almost everything
No gadgets or iphones
And games that might just make it fun
Save breaking any bones
With all the rules so rigid and
Consequences pretty hard
Back to school! Oh great! I think not!
When are hols next on the cards?

Teacher MOTS’s

So the latest idea proffered
Will test teachers to see
If they’re really up to scratch and
Can pass an MOT
To see which ones are worthy to
Educate our child
With more certification and
Stress to drive them wild

Now some are naturally aghast
And others still dismayed
For would re-registration find
Those who’ve gone astray
Or find old school educators
Who still prefer the cane
Those who put children though the mills
Those charlatans insane

And what about those teachers who
Sink in scholastic brooks
Would it help and give them succour
Or simply overlook?
In essence would it really work
Or just be an expense
Costing big bucks; lots of money
To make no difference?

Teachers!

There’s something about teachers
Although I’m not sure what it is
Whether it’s a legacy from childhood
Or the science teacher’s fizz
Is it the drama teacher’s wackiness?
Or the art teacher’s flair
The english teacher’s preciseness
Or the maths teacher being so austere
Is it the geography teacher’s spatial awareness?
Or the history teacher’s sense of style
Or maybe the PE teacher’s humour
In running that extra mile
Perhaps on reflection it’s the cookery teacher
And her lessons on baking cakes
Or is it down to the RE teacher
And the numerous retakes
Or maybe it’s the IT teacher’s
Unhidden facebook page
Or the Tech teacher’s attempt again
To conceal his blatant rage
Or perchance MFL teachers
Speaking as they go
Be it French, German or Italian,
Much is said that we don’t know!
Yes, there’s definitely something about teachers
Not forgetting those in music and psychology
But one thing is for certain
They’ve been there through history!
