It’s Not My Fault!

A portrait of Victim’s consciousness

Does the World Owe You Anything?

Lord Listen!

I believe I missed the email
That came straight from the Lord
Saying “Reply with hallelujahs
To confirm that you’re on board
To tick terms and conditions
And to say that indeed you
Feel that your faith is strong and sure
And eternally true”

But instead I didn’t answer
And for seven long years
He sent a plague of ailments
And a host of all my fears
Called poverty and homelessness
Divorce and hard up times
Sickness, death and famine
And other types of grime

And so I said, “Lord listen!
I’ve really had enough
Of all the bad you’ve dumped on me
The really rotten stuff
You’ve landed on my doorstep
For you’ve treated me badly
And what I just don’t get now
Is how you say that you love me”

“So, can you be more gentler
Show your hand of kindness please
Less sending all the bugs and such
Stop being such a tease
Let me know that what you say you are
Is genuinely right
For from my corner it appears
You’re really not in sight!”

To which He smiled and nodded
Said “Do you just not see
That in this time of trouble
You’ve grown through adversity
You’ve learnt about resilience
You’ve paved a way and more
For the wounds and scars have left you so
Much better off for sure!”

“For when all’s said and all is done
And you really, truly see
Less any faith or any god
You have just innately
A tool kit that you can draw on
Whenever you’re willing
For you are blessed with all you need
To get through anything!”

And the moral of this story
Whether times be good or bad
Is focus on your strengths for sure
Not on the latest fad
And see that wealth and riches
Don’t come from banks or gold
But are harboured in your heart and mind
And are always yours to hold!

Thank You

I just thought I would like to dedicate a post to all of you who have followed this blog over the past few years day in day out and thank you for continuing to do so.

In recent months , you may have noticed that I have been posting fewer poems but that is because something exciting has come out of the original reason for posting a poem a day which I will share now.

As you may be aware, I started this blog on the back of a challenge to post a poem a day for a year at the same time raising awareness of cardiac arrhythmias and syncope.  This was a very personal challenge for me, having been diagnosed with PoTS after a 30 plus year struggle of passing out in the most bizarre situations yet never getting a diagnosis until 2008.  But true to form, when life gives you lemons and you choose to make lemonade, truly remarkable things can happen.

The poetry challenge was well received and the statistics showed just how many of you read it but more importantly just how many were finding out why I was doing it.  From this, Ginz and Tonic started to raise awareness just as I had hoped and to this day continues to do so.  But it also led to the formation of a specialist support group for patients in our area who also have an arrhythmia or suffer from Syncope.

As a psychology student with special interest and a background in Positive Psychology and coaching, I set about working with dedicated clinicians from our local hospital, Grantham Hospital and together we formed Beat-It Grantham.  This arrhythmia and syncope support group facilitates a programme of education, a platform of shared lived experience between members and much needed social support.  We also go into the local community to raise further awareness of these conditions and last night were delighted to be recognised for our work at the United Lincolnshire Hospital Trust Staff Awards evening as we were presented with the working together award for 2016.

Life is a collaboration and when we work together we can truly benefit so many but then doesn’t the blogging community know that already!?!  So my message is one of thanks to all who have supported this venture from the beginning.  I don’t think I ever thought that the beat in poetry would translate into the beat within that is our heartbeat but there you go – remarkable things happen with a little innovation and a lot of help from your friends!  Life is good!  Life is inspirational!

Many thanks

Gini

Gravitational Waves (well kind of)!

Be the ray that escapes
The wave that moves out
Contracting; Expanding
Without little doubt
That when the world seems so pressing
When you’re feeling sucked in
That the ripple to freedom
Is the way that you win

Winter Sun (Haiku)

Bright sun in winter
Infusing the soul with hope
Energy and life

Happy Birthday NHS

Happy birthday NHS
For sixty seven years the best
Giving to each kind relief
When need arises; long or brief
With Healthcare offered free to all
To any person who may call
Alleviating pain and more
In a service for rich and poor

And now as we move on from here
Let’s uplift it and hold it dear
Respecting all who give their care
With gratitude that they are there
And pray that as the years unfold
This institution will grow old
To still serve you and still serve me
And last into eternity

The Battle Of The Bulge

When you start a new diet
You think openly
This is going to work
I’ll drop pounds – just you see

And you stick to it rigidly
Do just as your bid
Til the devil pricks consciousness
Bout the doubts you had hid

He tempts you with chocolate
Cakes even wine
Says, “Don’t worry – you’re gorgeous
And all will be fine”

“For these good things in life
Are for you to enjoy
And the weight loss can wait
For it’s just a decoy”

“It will starve you and make you
So sad” so he says
“A ruse – just ignore it”
He repeats in your head

And the idea of running
Or working out in the gym
He tells you is barmy
For your chances are slim

“Slim to achieve it
So why bother at all”
Says the devil incarnate
Pushing each one to fall!

But the strong knock him back
Say – “Devil be gone
For in part you are right
But in essence you’re wrong”

“Go dance with another
For today I will stick
With the plan that quite simply
Will get me fitter than fit”

“And keep me trim and in shape,
Lose the weight that I bear
So Devil get packing
You really don’t care”

For each knows the worth
Of losing those pounds
Not to look good in mirror
Nor the best when beach bound”

“But to save up reward
With good health to achieve
Reduce heart attack risk
And diabetes”

And maybe hold out
For a healthier you
A lighter inspired one
And that much is quite true!
