The Battle Of The Bulge

When you start a new diet
You think openly
This is going to work
I’ll drop pounds – just you see

And you stick to it rigidly
Do just as your bid
Til the devil pricks consciousness
Bout the doubts you had hid

He tempts you with chocolate
Cakes even wine
Says, “Don’t worry – you’re gorgeous
And all will be fine”

“For these good things in life
Are for you to enjoy
And the weight loss can wait
For it’s just a decoy”

“It will starve you and make you
So sad” so he says
“A ruse – just ignore it”
He repeats in your head

And the idea of running
Or working out in the gym
He tells you is barmy
For your chances are slim

“Slim to achieve it
So why bother at all”
Says the devil incarnate
Pushing each one to fall!

But the strong knock him back
Say – “Devil be gone
For in part you are right
But in essence you’re wrong”

“Go dance with another
For today I will stick
With the plan that quite simply
Will get me fitter than fit”

“And keep me trim and in shape,
Lose the weight that I bear
So Devil get packing
You really don’t care”

For each knows the worth
Of losing those pounds
Not to look good in mirror
Nor the best when beach bound”

“But to save up reward
With good health to achieve
Reduce heart attack risk
And diabetes”

And maybe hold out
For a healthier you
A lighter inspired one
And that much is quite true!

Arrhythmia

It beats but not in tempo
It pulses out of time
It taps all in a muddle
Less rhythm and less rhyme
Wiping the hours out daily
In a whirl of dizziness
Aware of butterflies in veins
Or struggling to catch breath
As heart beat and heart rhythm
Conducts all out of skew
For that’s the way arrhythmia
Can feel when it strikes you!

ARRHYTHMIA

Heart Healthy

Have you looked at the environment
To see if it can be
Altered in any kind of way
To be more heart healthy

A place that will encourage growth
A setting where the heart
Is given chance to optimise
In fine fettle to start

And where all opportunities
Inspire good choices too
To help create more healthiness
With well-being for you

And if you think a shift’s required
Will you step up and see
What you can do to challenge where
These changes need to be.

29th September every year is World Heart Day focusing on creating heart healthy environments.

Heartstrings

Not only does it beat and tick
Expand; contract in time
But plays and pulls on strings that go
Past rhythm and past rhyme

Emotions calling unified
The threads that join each one
Across the planet; souls combined
Invisible and long

That extend metaphysically
Through ether and through air
Connections that conjoin each heart
To stretch from here to there

That tug when distance separates
By elasticity
As a reminder that we will
Love through eternity

You’ve Got The Beat

There are hearts wherever you might look
Just see them all about
But only one sort needs your time
And care to sort right out

The one inside your body, see
The one that pumps to squirt
The blood into your arteries
That stays awake alert

For every day and every night
It beats a constant stroke
To keep your body stocked up with
Clean blood. For real – no joke!

It works so hard and cannot rest
But you can help it still
With healthy food and exercise
To make yourself feel brill

And every now and then maybe
Just count the beats from it
To know your pulse rate and rhythm
As part of keeping fit!

Pulse

They said “Go get the leccy man”
The one who checks the wires
The chap who tests the current and
Who sees what then transpires”

They said get him to look at it
But then the fuse just blew
The meter crashed and power all failed
And sparks spat out and flew

The lights switched off; the cooker stopped
The fridge got rather hot
And all because I didn’t call
Because I had forgot!

And it’s the same thing with your pulse
The beat within your heart
As leccy current fires this beat
Save needing a kick start!

So take a simple test to know
Your pulse beyond all doubt
For if it goes awry at all
You can get it checked out

“Leccy” is a colloquialism for Electric

Sonnet To A Heart Beat (Know Your Pulse)

A heart beat pumping though life every day
A rhythm finely honed to tick on by
A pulse that taps and never goes away
A cadence of existence to imply
A measure that keeps tempo and keeps time
A timpani in life that we all know
A stroke that paces like a structured rhyme
An undulating meter fit to go
Yet palpitate or syncopate the beat
Or feel it quiver anachronically
When pulse jiggers and jumps out of repeat
Go get a check-up with your own GP
For know your pulse and maybe stave off strife
Rhythmically aware to save your life

Know Your Pulse

Beyond The Mirror

Looking in the mirror and thinking
“Flip! What happened there?”
With hair all wild and crazy
Sticking out without a care
And so grey – where did that come from
When did these signs appear?
For time is rocking on a bit
And age becoming clear
When did these wrinkles creep into
The folds of skin by eye
And oh boy, what gave that stomach grace
To drop south nearer thigh?
But still – each line, each fold, each crease
Are stories in life’s pot
Of a life lived, that’s cared, that’s smiled
So hey! Who gives a jot!

Looking in the mirror and thinking
In a fine and dandy way
Hey if this is what the years can do
Then there’s not much to say.
With hair pure white like wisdom
Each crease, a memory
From smiling through life’s path or course
That’s good enough for me!
And as for stomach – best less said
Save once in days now lost
Four little lives were born from whence
The muscles bore the cost
And so the marks of life reside
On body and on head
But greatest image not in sight
Is heart that still beats red

Beyond the Mirror

Head Or Heart?

Your mind is ahead of your heart
The seat of all cognitive glow
So let it abide with the rest of your ways
To move with and swing in the flow

For the heart needs to beat all in time
In rhythm and rhyme in your life
To work in conjunction with all of your mind
To save contradiction and strife

So let the cogs turn in your head
Work with your heart strings like pulleys as one
And live in the lane of life’s sweet harmonies
Where your heart and your mind get along

To

To hold a child’s small hand
To hear their fast heart beat
To listen to their song and rhyme
To walk their steps petite
To hear their worries and their toils
To understand their mind
To take the time so selflessly
To give; to be so kind
To uplift all their worth
To cherish their esteem
To speak with love; to act the same
To let them hope and dream
To pray for their safe keeping
To keep them from all ill
To save them from a fallen path
To bid them their free will
To accept them as they are
To teach them every day
To lead them to green pastures
To believe in what they say
To honour and protect them
To help them do their part
To see the good and happiness
To hold their hand and heart
