Bedtime
Is it too early to go
To bed before sundown
Without saluting lunar moon
Who might then wear a frown
If ignored and not welcomed in
As eye lids start to drop
Is it too early? Is it? Is it?
Or can I go and flop?
Is it too early to go
To bed before sundown
Without saluting lunar moon
Who might then wear a frown
If ignored and not welcomed in
As eye lids start to drop
Is it too early? Is it? Is it?
Or can I go and flop?
The moon waxes her passage
Shining through silhouetted branches
Set against the dark indigo sky
Radiant in her being
Although out of reach beyond the clouds
That skate in whispers
Like ghosts; ethereal in the midnight air
Yet still she nestles in partnership with Mother Earth
In synchrony with the universe
Suspended in space yet locked –
Locked in matrimony to this blue planet
In a bond extending into eternity
The lunar disk that paces cross the sky
White luminosity through blackness speeds
Behind the clouds of grey and darkness shies
Controlling waves she summons ocean’s needs
Celestial body gleaming rays of white
In synchronous rotation shows one face
A natural satellite that shines so bright
Ecliptic pathway circling with grace
Yet throughout time tis said that a full moon
Will influence with madness so perplexed
And warp the mind to waver out of tune
To leave each man and woman over vexed
Still marvel at our moon less dare profane
As lunar phases wax before they wane
The moon shines bright across the bay
Infusing light; enough to spy
The depths of shadows on the waves
Against the blackened azure sky
And dropping on the waves that break
Upon the shoreline constantly
A glistening spark from starlight bright
To twinkle there out on the sea
Amidst the dunes of windswept sand
The rustle of the dried out grass
The lunar creatures come to dance
And wait for night to turn and pass
And still the tides lap silently
Upon the beach in wait for day
As currents wax and wane in time
With moon that shines across the bay
Have you ever got clock muddled
And woken in the night
To think that it is morning and
Quite late at that – such fright!
To quickly jump up from your bed
And rush to start your day
Only then to take a breather
And find to your dismay
That in fact it’s really early
That morning hasn’t come
Oh dear you feel so silly and
So daft; a numpty chum!
But stop and think more rationally
As you return to bed
For all that rushed activity
Will mean that you instead
Can have a little lie in when
The cock finally crows
So that it’s swings and roundabouts
Now sleep – enjoy your doze!
Dedicated to my friend, NB, and my son after their separate night-time antics doing just this 🙂

Well that was such a short short day
Just where did it all go?
The moon rose quite late in the morn
And went down quick not slow
But what a spectacle it was
Up in the bright night sky
The stars a-shining out at once
A nebulous up high
And peaking from behind the clouds
The winter solstice moon
To herald in the shortest day
That came and went quite soon.
Celestial moon what do you see
Out on your nightly wandering
What marvels do your travels bring
What sights appear to thee?
What glimpses do you then observe
What hides yet seeks below your glow
Beneath the stars that twinkle so
Against your crescent curve
Oh mighty moon up in the sky
Dispelling darkness in your way
Lit gently by your lunar ray
What do you grasp on high?
What ferries forth beneath you moon
What secrets do you keep so well?
What stories could you really tell?
In light of time so soon
Celestial moon what do you see
Out on your nightly wandering
What marvels do your travels bring
What sights appear to thee?
The full moon’s arising
Watch out and beware
For old stories are told
Of the werewolves out there
Dressed by lunar attire
In stealth they succumb
To the lure of the moon
That’ll leave them quite numb
In the light of the moon
Now found and sought out
Shape shifters by magic
Are beyond any doubt
Caught in aberrant dread
With shudders of fear
And mutated to wolves
As full moons do appear
As creatures of horror
They menace the night
And threaten the darkness
With savagery and fright
To entrap and ensnarl
Confuse and perplex
Invading sweet dream worlds
And their minds over vex
The full moon’s arising
Watch out and beware
For old stories are told
Of the werewolves out there
Dressed by lunar attire
In stealth they become
Grey dogs of the night time
In the full moon’s syndrome
Today I swam amongst the fish
In a cobalt blue lagoon
I rode the back of dolphins
In the light of a sapphire moon
I swam besides the sharks
In the ocean feeling brave
I galloped with the seahorses
In the wash and crests of waves
I sat among the mermaids
On the rocks lapped by the sea
In a maritime adventure
That washed right over me
And then the stars lit up the heavens
The planets shone from far away
As the sun fell from the horizon
Sealing off that special day
And as the spectral radiant sunset
Dissolved into the night sky
I caught the flicker and pulsating lights
Of jellyfish and coral passing by
With a mystic bioluminescence
That signalled from the deep
Revealing oceanic magic
In a world that never sleeps.
