Dawn

Where waves lap on the sea shore
In rhythm and rhyme with the moon
Tides of contentment spill into my being
Freshened by the sea air
Exalted by the ocean’s freedom
Lapping gently in harmony with life
And I think to myself
What a beautiful day
They say if it’s not broken then
Don’t meddle and fix it
Or tamper with what is working
Or try to change the fit
And yet each day the dawn breaks
And birds all congregate
To natter and cheep ‘tween themselves
What could be the day’s fate
They gossip in the branches and
They shout from tree to tree
So are they fixing up the day
Or just waking up me!
And if dawn breaks is it broken?
Is it down and feeling blue
Is that why it’s a new day
To replace the old one too
Is it a good occasion to
Mend what went on before?
I think that it just might be that
A better day for sure!
The muted light of dawn awakes and sees
The crisp and fresh air bite at jack frosts feet
Where dew drops freeze upon the verdant trees
And mist rolls lonely down the silent street
Where birdsong breaks the curfew from the night
Where sun arises slowly in the east
The world appears in early morning light
A new morn heralds in the daytime feast
Yet still a slumber holds across the land
Cocooned in comfort quietly in each bed
Where souls of men are bathed in torpor’s sand
In dreams that play throughout their sleepy head
And so as sunrise brings the night to end
The hope of a new day on earth transcends
What a fine and dandy morning
The sun is in the sky
The sea is lapping at the shore
And gulls fly way up high
The breeze is of contentment
And the mood is full and bright
So tickety boo with spring in step
Ensures that all is right
To blow the storm clouds right away
To dust away the fog
To sing and dance and celebrate
Now time to walk the dog!
Piercing the air with a solitary tone
Through exuberant fresh and sensual morning air
With dew clinging in pearled droplets
Replenishing nature’s reservoir
And lunar crescent bowing gracefully
Away to western shores
The single note heralds in the day
Beckoning, signalling, summoning others
To the aurora of dawn, breaking nocturne’s sleeping silent spell
To subpoena the sun from slumber’s rest.
The crystal note resonates clearly
Rousing a duet in a harmony of two then more
Awakening and embracing morning’s song
Proclaiming territory in avian serenade
With warbler eliciting trill and chink,
Chiff and chaff and rattle
Flourishing an enchanted spectacle
Tweeting nature’s splendid cantata
The hymns to the dawn from the feathered choir
The choral phenomenon of the Dawn Chorus
The day lies in wait
Not like a tiger waiting to pounce on its prey
Or like an eagle swooping down from a magnificent height
Yet more subtlety as the sun creeps over the horizon
Filling the sky with the spectral orange rays of a splendid sunrise
And with anticipation from the twitter of the resplendent dawn chorus,
That wends its suggestive and propositioning tones in an alluring and revitalised melody.
The players of the day sit in the wings ready to move onto the stage of life
Ready to live, to love, to delve and dive, to exalt and to triumph
And to experience the rhapsodies as the Oratorio unfurls in the essence of their beings,
Revealing the mysteries of the souls laid open and hidden,
The paths and the journeys both seen and unseen
Working together and apart, all weaving their unique threads across this beautiful planet.
Yes the day lies in wait except how will the day lie when it has waited?
