Noises in the Night

Through the crisp night air
A dog barks incessantly
Yapping at the heels of a shadow
As ethereal spirits dance amongst the branches
And whispers rustle in the leaves
In the distance an owl screeches
And cats yowl in the feint light of a distant moon
Whilst the world sleeps
Or at least tries to!

Night (Haiku)

As night skies fall down
And darkness covers the sky
Stars twinkle on high

Sweet Dreams (Haiku)

A nighttime haiku
To wish each a good night and
Sweet dreams ’til morning

Nightfall

The embers of the day burn red
As I turn in to rest my head
And drift off to the land of dreams
Where all is perfect so it seems

Where skies wash blue and clouds appear
As cotton buds save any tears
And grass rolls fore in emerald green
With brooks all bubbling diamond streams

Whilst birds nest down; no longer fly
And owl hoots out her lullaby
As distant worries fade away
And into slumber goes the day

The Sky Is On Fire

The sky is on fire
Burning the embers of the day
Into the oblivion of night
With a wild ferocity
Blazing in the heavens
With the passion of hell
As a sea of flames combusts
To herald in another glorious morrow

The Sky Is On Fire

Ruby Verge

Iodine line beneath red streak in sky
Time to rest heads and on pillows then lie
To breathe in the last air that spills from the blue
To slumber in darkness that’s covering you
For away to the west the ruby verge creeps
As the world in the east is now sound asleep

Tiredness

Consumed in a mist of fatigue
Like a blanket
A fog; a miasma
That engulfs
Overwhelms
Almost suffocates
With weighty heaviness
Lethargy and stupor
Until finally sleep arrives
And slumber takes control
To renovate
Revive; invigorate
In readiness for another day

Dreamland

Have you been there?  Have you seen it?
Have you felt the air on face?
Have you truly known?  Experienced?
Have you been to such a place?

Where grass is blue and sky is green
The trees grow upside down
Cats and dogs audibly converse
The place; another town

Where anything is possible
Where boundaries don’t exist
Where people come and others go
Surrounded in a mist

Or maybe it’s a vapour
So truly ethereal
A definition inside you
The call of what you feel

And yet this place is only known
To you and you alone
For though so many might be there
It just cannot be cloned

For there you steal away at night
In soporific state
To drift off on sedation’s tides
As dreamland lies in wait.

Night-time Antics

Have you ever got clock muddled
And woken in the night
To think that it is morning and
Quite late at that – such fright!
To quickly jump up from your bed
And rush to start your day
Only then to take a breather
And find to your dismay
That in fact it’s really early
That morning hasn’t come
Oh dear you feel so silly and
So daft; a numpty chum!
But stop and think more rationally
As you return to bed
For all that rushed activity
Will mean that you instead
Can have a little lie in when
The cock finally crows
So that it’s swings and roundabouts
Now sleep – enjoy your doze!

Dedicated to my friend, NB, and my son after their separate night-time antics doing just this 🙂

Celestial Moon

Celestial moon what do you see
Out on your nightly wandering
What marvels do your travels bring
What sights appear to thee?

What glimpses do you then observe
What hides yet seeks below your glow
Beneath the stars that twinkle so
Against your crescent curve

Oh mighty moon up in the sky
Dispelling darkness in your way
Lit gently by your lunar ray
What do you grasp on high?

What ferries forth beneath you moon
What secrets do you keep so well?
What stories could you really tell?
In light of time so soon

Celestial moon what do you see
Out on your nightly wandering
What marvels do your travels bring
What sights appear to thee?
