Normality – A Rambling

What is normality
But an illusion
Shared by many
Yet not by all
A manipulation
Of reality
Of A reality
Scattered amongst equals
With significance
Accepted
Not questioned
Except by
One

But then isn’t it that one
That makes normal possible
Like a line of straightness
Where the line
Only seems straight
Only survives
As a result of the kink
A curve
Where without that bend
There would be
No straight
Nothing more

And so too without abnormality
Without that ‘one ‘
Can there be normal?
Without delusion
Can reality prevail?
Without the mask
What really is there
The possibilities
Swimming in a sea
An ocean
Of possibilities
On the spectrums of odd
Weighed in the scales of reason

Lives being lived
Unfolding in the rainbow
The wavelengths of colour
Each as precious as the next
Refracted through a prism
To bend light
Curving whiteness
To bring brilliance
All realities warped
In hues; in shades
Of colour
For maybe everything is normal
Or maybe normality just doesn’t exist

What’s Normal?

We’ve trimmed down what is normal
Taken out the quirks and whims
Reduced the bounds of typical
To make the standard slim
With a narrow, thin prescriptive
Of ordinary and sane
Determining what fits our camp
Not goes against the grain

And yet to you what’s normal
Will not be run of mill
To others whose experience
Does not fit your life’s bill
And so perhaps normality
Is then a state of mind
Where boundaries of what’s typical
Are really undefined

For what we see and judge are just
Perceptions; nothing more
Interpretations from once stance
That really wipe the floor
With anything that’s deemed normal
For in truth does that exist?
Or is normality in fact
More an abnormal twist?

The Pool of Mediocrity

The pool of mediocrity
Appears a commonplace
Of banal plain run-of-the-mill
All grey at the coalface

Normality personified
And ordinary too
But without mediocrity
Could excellence imbue?

Could superb really then exist
Without deficiency
Could brilliance shine out above
Inferiority

For would we then perceive the state
Of tip-top quality
If we had nothing to compare
To mediocrity

And so perhaps this little pool
That’s shunned as nothing great
Is actually the harbinger
Of all we call first-rate!
