Diamond in the Rough

Landscape littered with refuse
Where crow flies overhead
Where vermin scavenges for food
Where others dare not tread

Where stench of yesterday is thrown
Out on the garbage heap
Where foul odour lingers in the nose
Where rot and decay steeps

Yet midst this putrefaction
A diamond in the rough
Lies hidden, lost, abandoned
Unrefined; not buffed

But still a diamond all the same
A gem with so much more
Potential, worth, capacity
If just realised and restored

And likewise, there will be those days
Those months and maybe years
When the jewel within is tarnished by
Many wet and salty tears

Those times when circumstance may yield
Turbulence and unrest
But see those times as polishing
The inner latent best

So that the diamond in the rough
Will stand out undisguised
A precious stone shining so bright
Potential realised

The Box

A box; to you and me a cardboard box
But to him a box of dreams
A vessel where he could be all
And everything it seems
A box with sails to float away
A den or hideaway
Or on its end a drum to beat
Or a car in which to play
Or furthermore when painted up
A house or fortress thing
Or a box to make a theatre with
Hosting puppets on strings
A box to build a Tardis with
To fly to far off galaxies
Or make a magic chair out of
So many possibilities
For to you and me a cardboard box
But to him, a small small boy
With imagination on his side
It is his greatest toy

And yet as boy grows old and moves
Into the adult years
The box is just a cardboard box
A vessel that appears
To fulfil its job to fetch and sort
But no-more full of hope
Or adventures, games and challenges
On what is a slippery slope
Into the realms of lost vision
A place called reality
That stifles imagination
Shackles creativity
The box a simple cube of sorts
Where usefulness construes
A practical solution that
Constrains altitude views
And so the box, the simple box
Loses capacity
To open up the world to glance
At all there is to see

When the day recedes in a symphony of colour
Flaming the dusky sky
I sleep that night midst dreams on fire
As slumber passes by

Then I rise renewed to a sun kissed day
With hope priming my heart
Invigorated, alive, content
Ready to play my part

For like a stage that nature’s set
With all her glorious might
The synergy of heart and mind
Awakens true delight

And dreams aren’t lost in sleepy folds
Yet live and are set free
To bring the best out; realise
Potential within me!

What rubble is in your life?
What rocks get in the way
What boulders needs a-shifting
Not just this Easter Day
But daily on your journey
The journey we call life
Where maybe stones have cast their lot
To cause hassle and strife

Yet know there is salvation
For each and everyone

When all is said and done

Lies deep within your heart

If a spud, a mere potato
Can become so many things
Like crisps, french fries and vodka
Then you too can spread your wings
And aspire to be the person

Potatoes found glory!
And thus from modest beginnings
With the will to change and grow

To get the results you wanted to
Then take a bow and then move on
To your chosen pastures new

Then don’t give up or despair
Because there’s more success in failure
When you carry on from there

For to realize true potential
Sometimes takes a few attempts
So go on forth with focus new,
And perseverance not exempt

For with determination fostered
With motivation new
And a little bit of self-belief

And who’s to say that it won’t be

So dust yourself off and regather
And get on your za za zing
Then step out proudly in the knowledge
