Paranormal Prose

There are times when the pen
Becomes a channel
Expanding consciousness
Mediating the unseen
Through the medium of ink
Accessing a higher realm
That is inspired from within
Through dissociated flow
Bursting forth springs of spontaneity
Where words will appear as strangers
When reunited with their author
Surprising writer and reader alike
For then when the quill becomes still
That which is written is a mystery
An inscription of discovery
Paranormal prose

Happiness

So wretched is the heart of man
Who strives to thus attain
A wealth in riches, money or
Extrinsic reward gain.

How flawed he is in searching for
Material luxuries
Summoning will for more and more
Hoping to be happy.

For such craving will only lead
To senses unfulfilled
And sours even the finest times
As such quest wrecks the thrills

For happiness cannot be sought
Cannot be chased; pursued
Yet more so is a consequence
That comes about; ensues

A quality or side effect
That resides in the flow
Of optimal experience
To leave its mark a-glow

And though perhaps it sometimes seems
Elusive at its best
Through conquest of one’s inner self
Shine rays of happiness

Based on the theory of “flow” as researched by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (2002)

What Is A Child?

What is a child? It’s hard to say
For concepts and beliefs
Vary so much from here to there
In time span and relief

A “social actor” some may say
With ideas of their own
Or maybe childhood simply is
A construct all alone

A definition of the young
That’s made to represent
The way non-adults operate
And their development

Development that wax and wanes
With patterns that reveal
A change towards more organised
Not just the way they feel

Debated through biology
And the environment
Traced back to the great minds of old
Philosophy’s intent

And so what is a child you ask?
A question that implores
The quest to look at social traits
Genes, culture and much more

Rethread Our Heads

Lets rethread our heads
Unwind our minds
Through neural corridors
Potentially with active might
Synaptic strength and more
Controlling what we think and do
Project or indeed say
The way we rock to innervate
Our outcomes every day

Don’t Lose Your Dreams

Don’t lose your dreams
Don’t cease to hope
Don’t lose your way in life
But focus on the road ahead
The can do lest the strife

Be steadfast and
Have foothold sure
Be ready and be true
To walk the path of your intent
The one that’s marked for you

And live a life
A happy life
That’s full of joy and smiles
And be inspired eternally
Across the many miles

The Eight Stages of Life

In the first year let hope prevail
Make trust the overview
To let a baby feel so safe
To then depend on you.

From one to three imbue a will
Of self-sufficiency
Responding to the children’s need
Promote autonomy

From three to six avail purpose
And then self-starting ways
Initiating enterprise
In how they work and play

From six to ten plus one then build
A competence so true
Rewarding efforts to give pride
Achievement’s focussed view

Then into adolescence make
Coherent sense of “me”
That integrates the past to next
For strong fidelity

In early adult years enroot
Values that share and care
Still being faithful to oneself
With love put right in there

Next into middle adulthood
Preserve a legacy
For future generations by
Generativity

Before the later years of life
Look back fulfilled; complete
With satisfaction on a life
Content at such a feat!

This poem is based on Erik Erikson’s eight stages of identity development theorised in 1950 as part of his psychosocial theory of identity.  Erikson was a psychoanalyst, and the first theorist to view identity as psychosocial.

You are Your Coffee!

Look in the bottom of a cup
And tea leaves it is said
Will give an indication of
What lies on roads ahead

But drink a cup of coffee and
The way you like it best
Might show up who you really are
A real persona test

For if you drink a latte it
Is said that you will be
The kind to seek much comfort sure
Give time so generously

Or maybe cappuccino is
Your choice of coffee brew
Disclosing that you like control
The obsessive in you

Whilst those who sip at their coffee
Just black “au naturel”
Have quieter dispositions with
Moods stirred in as well

And frappocino lovers, it
Is said will set the trends
Enjoying lots of new things and
So bold around their friends

Lest those who sip from instant brew
Procrastinators sure
Will be the most laid back of all
With few plans laid in store

So introvert or extrovert
Patient; perfectionist
The way you take your coffee might
Come with a quite a twist!

Based on a study by Dr Ramani Durvasula, clinical psychologist, who conducted a study of 1,000 coffee drinkers and assessed a number of common personality styles and psychological traits.  To find out more click here or here

Emotional Barometer

Emotional barometer
Detecting winds of change
Picking up the little nuances
When pressures rearrange
From lower up to higher
From calm to fairly stressed
Emotional barometer
The ultimate mood test?

With measures of intensity
From happy to quite sad
From bored to most excited or
From good to really bad
A small but sure barometer
That gauges through each day
Connections to our feelings and
Our moods along the way

Innate Encouragement

The hidden gem within us that
Ignites a burning fire
The small inconsequential act
Propels and can inspire

The minute prick of consciousness
Or surge from in our heart
The thought, the deed or even dream
The challenge to impart

The inborn motivation that
Pushes intrinsically
A determined focussed vision
Driving forward natively

Desire, hopes, wishes; all of them
Supporting achievement
From inspirations droplets
Innate encouragement

Where Is The True Equality?

Where is the true equality
That comes this day and age
When it appears some women are
Still treated like a page
As servant in attendance and
Enslaved just by their sex
Excluded by their gender that
In short’s a double hex
To curse them; hold them hostage to
Deny them freedom to
Stand up, be strong, uphold their rights
It really doesn’t do
For bar the call for equalness
And move from suffragette
Woman should stand equivalent
Alongside men and get
An equal part in what is said
Throughout society
To have, to hold, to be involved
Not side-lined!  Let them be
Allowed to breathe, to prosper, to
Contribute more beside
Consider them in equal rank
In unity reside
