Don’t Rhyme Your Poems!

She said “Don’t rhyme your poems!”
“Well why forever not?”
I answered flabbergasted
For clearly she’d forgot
The fun and the frivolity
Of mashing up wordplay
To bring about phrases that click
And tick along per se
That bounce along on the paper
And trip right off the tongue
That put a smile on faces of
The old and of the young

A means to convey messages
In flights of fantasy
That teeter on the precipice
So sentimentally
And hop and skip cross neurons
That surge throughout the brain
Much like a trigger pulled to fire
In poetic refrain
Whilst forging easy access
Succinct to memorise
To jolt the hearts and minds of all
In a cunning disguise

Whilst delighting Mr Wernicke
And thrilling Broca too
For rhyme is classless; doesn’t judge
The reader; it is true
And all it asks in sweet return
Is that you dig the beat
Get down with it all chilled; relaxed
Whilst putting up your feet
Without pretence or masquerade
That it is anything more
Than simple undiluted words
That many do adore!

A Poetry Riddle

“I have five feet!”
“Five feet you say?”
“Why do you three more
Than me for I have only two
That get me through my day?”

“I have five feet
A beating heart
A pulse that pumps in time
A rhythm that just rocks my feet
To tap the ‘di-dum’ rhyme”

“Now I’m confused”
I say to you
“I’m baffled and perplexed
What thing with feet has more than two
That speaks? Whatever next?”

Poetry

Today marks the first anniversary of Ginz&Tonic.  A year ago I pledged to post at least one poem a day for a year to raise awareness of the work of stars.org.uk.  You can read more here.  It’s been a fabulous year and 550 poems I remain so very grateful for all the support that you have all given and of course, remain, thankful for the work of stars.org.uk who continue to be such a valuable service for those who experience unexplained loss of consciousness.  If you would like to know more – why not check them out.

Poetry

The essence of my heart
True dreams, beliefs and more
The past, the now and future paths`
Expressions open door

Words paving through the banks of time
Emotions rolling tide
The tempest finding harmony
For calmness to reside

The soul dancing on open page
The eyes all gleaming bright
And harbinger of sentiment
Sensations perfect sight

Evoking feelings’ passion
Imagination’s fire
Aesthetic voice that weaves as one
Notions that might inspire

Extending past the stanza to
Paint pictures; imagery
Drawing in letters, rhymes and verse
A little bit of me

Head Or Heart?

Your mind is ahead of your heart
The seat of all cognitive glow
So let it abide with the rest of your ways
To move with and swing in the flow

For the heart needs to beat all in time
In rhythm and rhyme in your life
To work in conjunction with all of your mind
To save contradiction and strife

So let the cogs turn in your head
Work with your heart strings like pulleys as one
And live in the lane of life’s sweet harmonies
Where your heart and your mind get along

Poetic Neuroscience

I swear my mind is starting to
Tick right along in time
And run around so crazily
To beat in constant rhyme
And by some wild plasticity
The constant use of verse
Has flicked a switch to overload
And fire up to converse
Through synapses now metrical
That bridge from A to B
With words that rhyme in perfect time
Acting potentially

Lifelong Friend

For just how long she had forgot
He’d sat upon the chair
Her old teddy in the corner
The worn out little bear
With the ear that had come adrift
And missing button nose
So bare in parts from all her love
He’d seen her highs and lows

But what a friend he’d been to her
Her confidant, her mate
He’d been her comfort blanket and
Sat with her while she ate
They’d cuddled up to go to sleep
He’d travelled many miles
And in those very early days
He’d watched her cry and smile

He’d held her hand and been her nurse
He’d sometimes been to school
He’d even joined in country walks
And taught her all the rules
And then as years had trundled on
And she’d grown up so tall
He’d been retired from his duties
To sit once and for all

And since that day he’d simply sat
On that chair just where he fell
But as a friend he’d still watched out
To see that all was well
And she; as age had crept up
And taken her by stealth
Just knew she had her friend close by
In good and in bad health

And as her years came to their close
That partnership survived
The old bear in the corner chair
Where friendship always thrived
And though no words were ever said
He knew he’d served an end
As lifelong mate and confidant
Past teddy bear to friend

Turn About

Give up the fags, the sweets and the booze
Give up the caffeine and buying more shoes
Give up the burgers and other fast food
Give up the moaning and being so rude
Give up the nose picking or chewing on hair
Give up the tendency to lean on your chair
Give up the life that never moves or works out
Give up these things and start turning about

About to a life where you are in charge
About to a life that is free and at large
About to a life where you’re the boss of your ways
About to a life that takes control of your days
About to a life that says “I love me, I do”
About to a life that says “That choice is mine too”
About to a life that’s not constricted by guilt
About to a life that is lived to the hilt!

The Bully

There was no meaning in his soul
And in his heart a searing hole
And his eyes a vacancy
In his spirit lost transparency
A fragile state that cried with hurt
Yet masked with words to disconcert
And deeds that punished for his pain
Lashing out in anger to kill and maim
Where consequence concerned him not
His victim’s lives were left in knots
Yet underneath he still cried out
To want the love he had forgot
To extend to those he had destroyed
With the bullying he had employed

Hope

A warming ray of sunshine
Imbuing each and every day
With reasons pure and simple
To carry on and not to stray
With purpose and with focus
With dedication and with might
To know that hope eternal
Will hold your hand through any plight

The willpower and the waypower
That turns its back on all despair
Increasing expectation
That goal obtainment is just there
Or at least around the corner
Hope is the catalyst
That takes away fear’s blinders
