Sonnet To The Autumn

The colours of the autumn hither fall
In oranges and reds and rusty browns
A bronzed array about with lost recall
Of greener days now past; leaves on the grounds
Where harvest fruits are reaped and gathered in
Amidst the fiery flames tumbling from trees
To carpet the cold earth with autumn skin
The smoke of bonfires hanging on the breeze
Yet lasting memories of the summer past
Not burnt in embers of the fall-time fire
Will soon give in to winter coming fast
Where frost and snow and icicles aspire
Meantime the rustling autumn days hold tight
Abundant and such splendid copper sight

A Poetry Riddle

“I have five feet!”
“Five feet you say?”
“Why do you three more
Than me for I have only two
That get me through my day?”

“I have five feet
A beating heart
A pulse that pumps in time
A rhythm that just rocks my feet
To tap the ‘di-dum’ rhyme”

“Now I’m confused”
I say to you
“I’m baffled and perplexed
What thing with feet has more than two
That speaks? Whatever next?”

Sonnet To Will Shakespeare

So trying something a little different especially for children, but hopefully adults can enjoy this as well.

Sonnet To Year Sixes

I look back on my school days happily
The friends I’ve made and all those hours of fun
Like fab times that are in my memory
Shining brightly like rays from a hot sun
That sparkle like the stars up in the sky
All fresh and good like grass so verdant green
That fly so free on wings of bird up high
The best days of my life that there have been
And yet now I must say a sad farewell
And move to a new school further away
To make more friends and hear a fresh class bell
As new beginnings open up each day
Yet still I will have learnt so much from here
As now I step into my seventh year

Sonnet to Venice

Venice; the Queen of Adriatic Sea
Who lies amidst the halcyon lagoon
In patchwork of canal’s antiquity
As star beneath the sapphire sky and moon
Like diamond set in royal diadem
Venetian crown that shimmers very bright
With gondolas encased in crystal gem
The jewel that shines in the celestial night
Yet Bridge of Sighs yearns softly and may weep
To spill a million tears into the stream
And fill the moonlit bay and rivers deep
As sorrow whispers move Venetian dream
Still city calls and beckons magically
To those who are bewitched by her beauty

Sonnet To The New Week

The week restarts as morning brightly shines
Awakening with sun on eastern shore
As weekend bids farewell and then resigns
And new beginnings offer hope and more
The zest and zeal of fresh horizons here
The warmth and kiss of yet another week
With strength to seek and look ahead out there
And inspiration’s guide be all to seek
For turn away from grumblings of the day
The moans and whines that dare to hold you back
The tears that yesterday has gone away
The thought that Monday comes with hard attack
And rise with glee to greet this fresh new week
To make it most amazing so to speak

Sonnet To A New Day

The muted light of dawn awakes and sees
The crisp and fresh air bite at jack frosts feet
Where dew drops freeze upon the verdant trees
And mist rolls lonely down the silent street
Where birdsong breaks the curfew from the night
Where sun arises slowly in the east
The world appears in early morning light
A new morn heralds in the daytime feast
Yet still a slumber holds across the land
Cocooned in comfort quietly in each bed
Where souls of men are bathed in torpor’s sand
In dreams that play throughout their sleepy head
And so as sunrise brings the night to end
The hope of a new day on earth transcends

Sonnet To Infinite Love

Love heralds in the sun, the stars, the moon
The universe beyond and milky way
The essence of the sea it does festoon
Love’s ocean depths and mountain’s height display
With radiance ablaze in its pure light
Love’s hope embracing planetary zeal
Unchanging, constant, sure and ever bright
It harnesses, protects. Love is the deal
And yet it is has no limits, will not wait
Cannot be summoned or called in at will
Love is not bound in fear or found in hate
Nor held a hostage tethered or kept still
For love a force that is forever free
       Extends beyond; goes past infinity

Sonnet to Infinite Love

Sonnet to Love Lost

Your love that shines forth as a summer’s day
Across the seas of passion wild and free
With rays that warm, that sing, that always play
Your heart that bleeds rose blood always for me
The petals of a flower that never fade
The sky that holds the universe as one
The depths of love that swells in life’s parade
The sun that warms, the stars my soul hath won
But yet you walk, you turn and disappear
Your coldness like the icecap swiftly breaks
Your eyes empty, indifferent not so dear
Your love now lost; your heart in tidal wake
Still I will know that you have once loved me
For love holds true in all eternity

Sonnet to the Spring

What leads the eye as life slowly appears?
Through misted dawn the sun beams forth her rays
What sights behold the oracle so clear?
As morn dispels the night, awakens day
And sound rings true through fragrant fresh new air
As peel of bells echo across the dale
And resonance vibrates in ear so fair
The choir of birds sing out behind the veil
But wait the skein of geese fly out of sight
And caw of crow breaks coarse save feel deaths sting
As winter bit and bid a last goodnight
The summer heat to soon burn out the spring
Still cowslip, bluebell and the first cuckoo
Emerge afresh; the verdant earth renew

Did you know that today (23rd April) would have been Shakespeare’s 450th birthday? He surely was the master of all sonnets – having attempted this my first sonnet, what it would be to be able to write as prolifically as the famous bard.
