First Day Of Summer (with a twist)

It’s the first day of summer
The sun’s out in the sky
Behind the clouds and raindrops that
Are falling from on high
But though it might be countered
Suggesting summer is a wash
The upside is warm puddles
In which to jump, splash! splosh! 💦💦

A Lost Summer’s Dream

They said it was summer
No word of a lie
As the heavens opened up
And rain fell from the sky
In torrents; in downpours
Day after day
Fabulous for ducks
Or if Noah came to stay
But in truth it was horrid
Miserable and soggy
As hour after hour
It drizzled constantly
With no let-up; no blue skies
No bright clear sunshine
Whilst the forecasters promised
It would be dry and be fine
But their words washed away
Down the street in a stream
Of flood water drowning
A lost summer’s dream

Seasons Of Life

The golden days of summer stand aside
Making room for autumn’s copper legacy
Clearing the way for winter’s ebony boughs
And the darkness that will fall upon the Earth

The barren, bleak, harsh cold obscurity
Where frosts will claw at the fallen harvest
Nourishing the deadened yet expectant ground
In readiness for the emerald Spring

And thus too in our own wildernesses
Let dying colours seep and imbue our souls
Milling out of sight in paint pots of anticipation
Until we are ready – once again

Ready to burst forth with radiance
Glorious brightness shining in golden rays
For the seasons of life are ours for the living
In nuggets of renewal; cyclic revival; resplendent

School’s Out For Summer

School’s out for summer
The kids are really glad
Grandma’s baking extra cakes
And smiles have replaced sad
As teacher’s get a well earnt break
And Mum and Dad get space
To not be rushed to fit it all
Into the big rat race

And road users say “Praise the Lord”
Until the schools go back
Cos they’ll get there in double time
With empty lanes and tracks
And shop keepers rub greedy mitts
Thinking of all the sales
As kids sprout through the summer months
And clothes depart their rails

So that by 1st September
When it’s time to return
Each child is cloaked in uniform
That says it’s time to learn
And also time to grow again
To have a chance to fit
Into the oversized jumper
And all other school kit

But for now let’s enjoy them
The holidays that is
Even though in a few short days
All will be in a tizz
With parents pulling out their hair
And cursing just how tough
It is to occupy young minds
Swearing they’ve had enough!

Sun Burn (Haiku)

Sun scorches the skin
For mad dogs and Englishmen
Are not used to it!

Contented

Ahead blue skies
Carrying away the weight of the world
In a breeze of summer comfort
Enlightening the heart
Uplifting the mind
Basking in the sun’s warm rays
Where worry dissipates
And contentment returns

Spring

She’s waited all winter
Laid still in the cold
So patiently held back
With all things on hold

She’s bided her time
But soon she’ll be here
With warm sunny days
Tidings of good cheer

As spring in her glory
Bursts forth into bloom
With bright yellow daffodils
Dispelling the gloom

And with lambs in the meadows
Frolicking anew
Comes the season of hope
And all things brand new

Akin to a bride
She’ll arrive splendidly
In a garment of green shoots
And a trail of beauty

Spring

Farewell Summer

Farewell summer
It was good to know
That you forgot us not
For a day or so

Perhaps you’ll return
If we’re really good
And bring some more warm stuff
Like you know you should

Cos deep down it’s true
We like the sun more
So hop off dear rain clouds
And save your downpour

And buzz off to the poles
To freeze over as ice
For summer should be warm
Yes warm, dry and nice!

Sunshiny Day

British Summertime

The weather’s heating up
The sun is out and high
On summer’s sultry promises
Of warmth up to July

For then the rain will turn up
As children go on break
To wash away the holidays
And summer in its wake

So make the most of May
And maybe also June
Because just in a blink of eye
It will be gone too soon

White Linen

White linen
Mirror on a sunny day
Tinged with scented summer flowers
The fragrant coolness of the cornflower
Fragility of wayside poppy
And delicacy of daisy in a chain
Image of verdant meadow grasses
Fresh dew drop on white lilly
Beneath the cerulean sky
And balmy breeze
Echoing song of summertime in the air
