Moaning, The Weather, Tea and Maybe Gin!

There’s an English addiction
That really is rife
To moan about everything
They encounter in life
They complain about this
They complain about that
They protest and they grumble
And they go tit for tat
Be it about their work or their children
Their house or their car
They take moaning to new levels
But the complaint that’s by far
The most idiosyncratic of all
Just has to be
When they moan about the weather
Be it wet or sunny
For in winter they witter
About the cold and the rain
Then in summer the sun
Gives them cause to complain
So like ‘em or love ‘em
To be English for sure
Is to be in a state of discontentment
Where only tea is the cure!
For tea is quite magic
As it makes all things right
When the English have done battle
And there’s no gin in sight!

Winter Sun (Haiku)

Bright sun in winter
Infusing the soul with hope
Energy and life

Sun Burn (Haiku)

Sun scorches the skin
For mad dogs and Englishmen
Are not used to it!

Never Give Up!

See the watery sun
Weak on the horizon
Struggling to awake
Battered by the storms
Diluted by the rains
Assaulted in her plight
To rise up against the night
And break through dawn’s fog

And yet always, without fail
Claiming victory each morning
As she climbs into the sky
Dismissing the darkness
To bring light on each new day
An example for us all
To never concede
To never give up

Setting Star

Sun bursts in twilit blaze
Exploding fragmented rays across the heavens
A golden volcano of crepuscular light
Erupting on the horizon in cardinal flames
Lapping in the wake of a cerulean sky
Heralding tinctures tinged in Autumn’s russets
To glow in the fire of this setting star

Shadows (A Haiku)

Shadows from the clouds
Dancing ahead the hill top
Chase the hidden sun

The Sun Has Got His Hat On

The sun has got his hat on and he’s coming out to play
But what I want to know is will he be here all day?
Of even if he is a he – why maybe he’s a she
Or maybe there’s no gender to the sun specifically!
But boy or girl or not all, what is the sunshine plan
For do I need galoshes on or instead suncream and fan!
And just how long will it stay up there in the bright blue sky
For this is England, green, green land where rain’s always nearby!
So when we sing the sun is out with hat upon his head?
Just smile and make the most of it as skin turns quickly red
And picnic, barbecue and more; enjoy the warmer ways
Cos soon, the sun will pack a bag and go on holiday!

Farewell Summer

Farewell summer
It was good to know
That you forgot us not
For a day or so

Perhaps you’ll return
If we’re really good
And bring some more warm stuff
Like you know you should

Cos deep down it’s true
We like the sun more
So hop off dear rain clouds
And save your downpour

And buzz off to the poles
To freeze over as ice
For summer should be warm
Yes warm, dry and nice!

Sunshiny Day

Ode To The Setting Sun

Awake renewed oh setting sun
With fresh vitality
And shine so bright tomorrow do
For one and all to see

With heat to warm the coldest heart
And rays that radiate
The solar spirit of your star
Inspiring minds first rate

British Summertime

The weather’s heating up
The sun is out and high
On summer’s sultry promises
Of warmth up to July

For then the rain will turn up
As children go on break
To wash away the holidays
And summer in its wake

So make the most of May
And maybe also June
Because just in a blink of eye
It will be gone too soon
